What's not to like about a very approachable, yet complex Cabernet? Made with fruit sourced from small vineyards in the Santa Clara Valley, the texture is supple, the fruit delightfully ripe, and the finish exquisite. The 2003 vintage was a good one for Cabernet, coaxing all the the lushness out of the berries, along with that perfect acid-tannin balance. Aromas of dried cherries, baking chocolate and dark earth open to plush dark cherries, cassis and dusty cocoa. A great match for juicy London broil or New York steak with herbed mushrooms.

From the Veranda Vineyard in Corralitos, comes this rich, strawberry-rhubarb pie wine, bursting with aromas of dark earth and ripe berries. The texture is meaty, with flavors of baked plums, ginger, nutmeg, and a hint of elusive Santa Cruz Mountains spice. Pair this bold beauty with roast lamb encrusted with rosemary and pistachios, or venison with juniper and loganberries.

Sangiovese is the primary component of Chianti in Italy and is known for its unique blend of bright cherry flavors and food-friendly acidity. This charmer is no slouch: its cheery, cherry perfume captivates the olfactory senses and its vibrant cherry pie flavors make your mouth water. An inviting and endearing wine, you’ll want to stock up on this one: you can scarcely find 100% Sangiovese in the California marketplace, and rarely do you find one this approachable and delicious. Its youthful exuberance and straight-forward enjoyment factor are sure to please wine and food lovers everywhere.

A classic warmer weather Cabernet, the Generosa 2004 Cabernet from the Dorsitch Vineyard in Santa Clara, offers a great balance of fruit, fine tannins and finesse. Decidedly masculine notes of leather, cigar and pine forest alert your senses to its inherent complexity. You’ll find dark plum, roasted meats, oregano, tarragon and spicy pepper on the palate. This is truly a match for a Bolognese sauce, a spicy polenta with grilled vegetables, or an herb-encrusted prime rib with horseradish. Although quite enjoyable now, this wine will definitely mellow and reward with proper ageing. A true Cabernet lover’s Cab.

Winemaker Chris Gemignani was fortunate to score some fruit from this prized and much-touted vineyard on Monte Bello Ridge, on the Saratoga side of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Long famous for providing the stunning fruit that made Ridge Vineyards a household name, Monte Bello delivers intensity of fruit that is hard to match, but is not atypical of higher elevation vines. Here is a fine example of rich, ripe Cabernet that enjoyed ultimate hang-time at the 1300 to 2600 ft elevation above the San Francisco Bay. Midnight velvety dark and rich, it has a hint of fine port. Practically absent of tannins, this Monte Bello Cabernet is surprisingly mouth-filling and satisfying, with just a hint of allspice on the rich plum-pudding finish.
